2:32 Splitter Installaton

Introduction

If a Passive Optical Network (PON) Protection Group (PPG) scheme is to be utilized, a 2:32 PON Fiber Splitter must be installed. Following completion of the installation of the 2:32 Fiber Splitter shelf and the Optical Network Terminals (ONTs), fiber connections must be made between the Quad Optical Input Units (QOIU7s) in the OLT and the splitter shelf, and from the splitter shelf to the customer ONTs (refer to 2:32 Splitter Fiber).

Use the following procedure to install the 2:32 Fiber Splitter shelf.

  1. Insert the splitter shelf into the desired position and push it straight back until the mounting brackets are flush against the mounting rails.
  2. Secure the splitter shelf with four #12-24 screws. Insert the two upper mounting screws first. Do not tighten the mounting screws until Step 4 has been completed. The following illustration shows a typical 2:32 Fiber Splitter shelf.
Information Note: When inserting the lower-left mounting screw, ensure the frame ground is installed on the screw before inserting it into the equipment frame.

  1. Insert the two remaining screws into the bottom mounting holes and tighten as required. Tighten the two upper mounting screws to ensure the splitter shelf is secure.
  2. Remove the paint from a rail mounting hole adjacent to the lower-left corner of the splitter shelf and connect the frame ground to the equipment rail.

Installation

Before proceeding with Turn Up, perform the following checks of all connections of the installed equipment:

  1. Check that the AC input connections to the DC Rectifier Shelf are properly connected and secure.

  1. Verify the polarity of the DC circuit breaker output connections to the DC Rectifier Shelf and that all connections are secure.

  2. Verify the polarity of the DC GMT output connections to the DC Rectifier Shelf and that all connections are secure.
  3. Check that all MDS5 and/or MDS7 connectors are properly inserted into the respective shelf connectors.

    Warning

Danger: It is very important to verify the polarity of all shelf connections. A wrong connection can cause the system not to work properly, can damage the shelf, and may cause bodily harm. For continued protection against fire, replace fuses only with another of the same type and rating. Indicating fuses have exposed live parts. Use caution when replacing or servicing them.

    Warning

Warning: Circuit breakers should be in the "OFF" position when installed in the system..

  1. Install the appropriately sized circuit breakers (see Table 1 on page 13) in the appropriate breaker positions, A through D, in the DC Distribution Panel of the DC Rectifier Shelf.
Information Note 1: Use the distribution label card, located on the door of the distribution section, to check fuse and breaker locations.
Information Note 2: Circuit breakers are of the bullet-nose style and slide into the breaker connection points with the "line" connector on the left and the "load" connector on the right. "Line" and "Load" are labeled on a sticker on the side of the breaker.

  1. If a Tellabs 1150 MDS5 or MDS7 shelf was installed in the appropriate fuse positions, insert GMT fuses in the DC Distribution Panel to support the 19 or 23-inch fan trays (see Table 1).
  2. Install an appropriately sized NEMA-rated AC connector on each of the AC input cables to the DC Rectifier Shelf.
  3. Replace the cover, removed in Step 1 in Installing the DC Rectifier Shelf, on the rear of the DC Rectifier Shelf.
Information Note: Do not apply AC power to the DC Rectifier Shelf until directed to do so in Turn Up.
