Cooling Fan Failure

Description

The system has detected that a cooling fan has failed and needs to be replaced. The fan may have either degraded flow or stopped.

Tellabs 1134 Shelf - The Tellabs 1134 shelf has an integrated fan assembly known as the Optical Fan Assembly (OFA). This fan is essential to proper operation of the Tellabs 1134 shelf. If both fans in the OFA fail, the shelf quickly overheats. Refer to Replacing the Optical Fan Assembly (OFA1) to replace the Tellabs 1134 OFA tray.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

Observe and follow all ESD instructions while handling Tellabs plug-in equipment.

Danger  Caution! The Tellabs plug-in equipment uses semiconductor devices that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove a plug-in from a protective packing box or equipment rack until time of installation or replacement. To equalize the static charge on the plug-in, establish a body path to ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to a ESD ground. If storing or shipping the plug-in becomes necessary, place the plug-in in a conductive shipping box to prevent static buildup.]

Apply the following precautions:

  • Use grounded wrist straps, table mats, floor mats
  • Handle static-sensitive devices by the nonconductive areas
  • Place static-sensitive cards into an antistatic plastic bag
  • Use protective ESD-sensitive packing and shipping bags, when returning repairable components

Trouble Clearing

The probable cause of this alarm is:
  • 1134 Cooling Fan Failure: The Optical Fan Assembly (OFA1) contains two fans which provide cooling redundancy for the Tellabs 1134 shelf. If a single fan fails, there is sufficient airflow to protect the shelf and replacement can be handled as a maintenance item. If both fans fail, the shelf may overheat, depending on the cards installed and the ambient temperature. If the shelf contains a QOIU7, even in a shirt sleeve environment, the shelf overheats in 1 minute or less. If a fan has failed, the OFA must be replaced as a high priority maintenance item.
Warning Warning: When replacing the OFA1, the replacement OFA1 must be inserted immediately after removing the failed OFA1. Failure to do so can result in damage to circuit cards installed in the Tellabs 1134 shelf.
