Current Alarms

The Current Alarms view allows the user to recognize one or more alarms and view the Severity Levels and Probable Causes text all on one screen. Additionally, the user can select multiple alarms at a time and use the Acknowledged feature to recognize alarms in one action. Use the navigation buttons at the bottom of the Active Application Window to page through multiple pages of alarms.

The Current Alarms view displays alarms at various levels. When the user selects:

  • The Network icon, the view displays alarms present on all OLTs, subtending cards, and shelves.
  • One OLT in the Common Tree, the view displays alarms on the selected OLTs and any subtending cards and shelves.
  • One card or shelf within an OLT in the Common Tree, the view displays alarms specific to that selection.

Use the following procedures to filter the displayed alarms:

  1. In the Application View Bar, click Alarms (), select the Current Alarms tab.
  2. To display alarms for all managed OLTs, select the Network icon. The current alarm status is displayed.

  3. Select from the Filters below the Current Alarms tab: Severity, Acknowledged or Probable Cause (refer to Table below for a description of each field.)

  4. To display alarms for one OLT, click the Network plus (+) sign to expand and select it.
  5. The alarms' view can be filtered by selections in the common tree.  The alarms shown will always be limited to those appropriate for the context.  The Network context will show all alarms for all OLTs managed by the EMS, the PON context will show all the alarms related to that PON or any underlying ONTs.  The ONT context would show only alarms relative to that ONT.
  6. Refer to any of the following sections for reference information and more details about the equipment location or alarm condition:
Alarm Field Description
Time

The date and time the alarm was set or cleared including the time zone code.

Note: The NE uses the UTC time (from the NTP server) and the day- light savings time setting to determine the local NE time. The NE sends the UTC time with the alarm. EMS converts the UTC time to the local EMS server time (including the daylight savings time adjustment). The result is indicated in this field.

Severity

The severity of the alarm.

  • Critical - Alarms that typically affect all services on the system requiring .
  • Major - Alarms that affect large groups of ports or users.  Major alarms typically affect 96 users or above.
  • Minor - Alarms that only affect individual users or small groups of users.
Probable Cause

The Probable Cause or name of the alarm.

Location

The physical device or port within the OLT that signaled the alarm.

OLT IP Address Internet protocol (IP) address of the OLT that sent the alarm.
OLT Name The name of the OLT that sent the alarm.
Service Affecting (SA)
Whether the alarm is service affecting or not.
ACK If the alarm is acknowledged.  Standing alarms can be Acknowledged to get them out of the view if there is no further action to be taken on that alarm.  Filters can be used to show or hide Acknowledged Alarms.
CLR If the alarm is acknowledged.  Standing alarms can be Acknowledged to get them out of the view if there is no further action to be taken on that alarm.  Filters can be used to show or hide Acknowledged Alarms.
Additional Info Additional information clarifying the exact alarm details such as MAC, IP, or other additional information.  It can also be used to identify the alarm subtype such as when an access violation occurs.
Tracking Notes

Alarm tracking notes exist for each alarm instance and allow notes to be added to that specific alarm.

Alarms Colors and Status

The color of the entry in the Alarm List Manager display corresponds to the color of the most severe alarm (MSA) status. For example, if any OLT has a critical alarm, the Network icon is red. For each OLT, the icon color reflects the MSA status for that OLT. Refer to the icon colors, alarm status, and alarm definitions listed in Table 2.

Table 2: Alarms View - OLT Icon Colors and Status Descriptions

Color Alarm Status Alarm Definition
Green Clear No alarms present.
Red Critical Most critical alarm status, defined by the Probable Cause and corresponding Severity setting.
Orange Major Major alarm status, defined by the Probable Cause and corresponding Severity setting.
Yellow Minor Minor alarm  status,  defined by the Probable Cause and corresponding Severity setting.
Warning The card has an active warning (no critical, major, or minor alarms are present).
Blue   The OLT is unreachable or the alarm synchronization at startup of the server is not complete or the most critical alarm status for the OLT is indeterminate.

Reordering of Alarms Table View

Users can drag column headings and re-order columns within the view.  In addition, clicking on the heading of a column allows sorting alarms by that column.  Columns can re-sized to fit the screen or see the full text of a given field.

Alarm Counts

In the Alarm View, the total of alarms for the selected OLT is displayed at the bottom of the screen.
