Equipment Rack Installation

The CBA1048 and Fan Tray accessory can be installed in a standard 19-inch equipment rack using an optional Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket.

Ensure that an Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket of the appropriate size is available.

Installation will generally include the following tasks:

  1. Connecting DC power and fan alarm wiring to the CBA1048 card cage
  2. Attaching the Fan Tray, Rectifier Shelf, and CBA1048 card cage to the Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket
  3. Installing the assembly in the equipment rack
  4. Connecting the cable assembly to the Rectifier Shelf

Connecting DC Power and Fan Alarm Wiring to the CBA1048 Backplane

The DC/Alarm/Fuse Block Cable Assembly routes DC power from the Rectifier Shelf to the CBA1048 backplane and Fan Tray, and the fan alarm signal from the Fan Tray to the backplane. DC supply A and B wires have Molex connectors that match those on the Rectifier Shelf on the input, and end in ring terminals that must be attached to the DC power input terminal block on the CBA1048 backplane. The fan alarm cable ends in a small Nylon connector that plugs into the backplane.

Have the CBA1048 on an open work surface, sitting on its front panel.

  1. Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the CBA1048 rear cover to the card cage. Remove the rear cover.
  2. Orient the card cage so that the barrier terminal strip (J27) is on the left.
  3. Unbundle the DC/Alarm Cable Assembly and lay it out on the work surface. Untangle the wires and group them according to their destinations.
  4. It may be helpful to secure the wire groups with cable ties for ease of handling during installation. Velcro cable ties or untightened Nylon cable ties can be used. The Velcro ties can be replaced with Nylon cable ties,or the Nylon cable ties can be tightened later after installation is complete and the final layout of the cable is determined.

  5. Using a #2 Phillips or medium slot screwdriver, loosen the following five screws from the CBA1048 barrier terminal strip (J27):
    A N- B N-
    A P+ B P+
    FGND

  6. Find the backplane DC power A and B DC power feed wires and attach them to the appropriate terminal strip screws.
    1. FGND = Green (x2)
    2. A/B N+ = Red
    3. A/B P+ = Black

Information Note: If the DC power polarity is reversed, the Tellabs equipment will NOT be damaged. It just will not operate until the DC power polarity is corrected.
  7. Plug the fan alarm cable connector (P30) into the P30 connector on the CBA1048 backplane.
  8. Hold the CBA1048 rear cover near its installed position and route the wires of the cable assembly through the exit hole in the rear cover at the top, left. Make sure that the two ferrite beads are on the outside of the cover.
  9. Install two screws to hold the rear cover in place.
  10. Coil the DC/Alarm cable wiring, temporarily secure it with a Velcro cable tie, and attach it to the top or side with one or more magnetic cable attachments.

Attaching the CBA 1048 and Fan Tray to the Equipment Rack Bracket

The CBA1048 card cage and Fan Tray are attached to the Equipment Rack Bracket with standard rack screws.

  1. Set the Fan Tray on the work surface with the front panel nearest you.
  2. Orient the Equipment Rack Bracket so that the clear holes are on the right, and the holes with the PEM nuts are on the left rear surface.
  3. Place the lower left side of the Equipment Rack Bracket behind the right side Fan Tray mounting bracket. Attach using two rack screws.
  4. Set the CBA1048 card cage on top of the Fan Tray and position it so that its right side mounting bracket is in front of the Equipment Rack Bracket. Line up the holes and attach the CBA1048 card cage with two rack screws.
  5. Uncoil the DC/Alarm cable and locate the Fan Tray connector on the DC/ Alarm Cable. Route it to the front through the slots at the bottom of the Equipment Rack Bracket. Plug the cable connector into the Fan Tray front panel connector.
  6. Coil the DC/Alarm cable wiring, temporarily secure it with a Velcro cable tie, and attach it to the side of the CBA1048 card cage and/or the rear of the Equipment Rack Bracket with one or more magnetic cable attachments.

Installing the Rectifier Shelf

The Rectifier Shelf is installed in the top position of the Equipment Rack

  1. Place the Rectifier Shelf in the rack at the top position and push it all the way in.
  2. While holding the Rectifier Shelf in position, secure it to the rack rails with 4 12-24 rack screws.
  3. Untangle and separate the remaining wires of the cable assembly.
  4. Plug the DC A plug of the DC cable assembly into the right-hand socket (when viewed from the rear) on the back panel of the Rectifier Shelf, and the DC B plug into the left-hand socket.
  5. Remove the ground wire that is attached to the left side of the Rectifier Shelf.
  6. Add the ground wire supplied to the right side of the Rectifier Shelf as shown. Strip and crimp as required. Do the same for the Fan Assembly as shown.
  7. Insert the ground wires into unused holes in the grounding block and tighten the screw using a medium slot or a #2 Robertson square drive screwdriver or bit.
  8. Plug the AC line cord(s) into the IEC AC connector(s) on the rear surface of the Rectifier Shelf. DO NOT plug the AC line cord(s) into the building mains at this time
  9. Manage the excess cable using the Ty-Raps and magnetic holders as shown.
  10. See the Swing Rack section for installing the fuse block and rectifier modules.

Installing the CBA1048/Fan Tray Assembly

Ensure the installation location in the equipment rack has at least 7 rack units of vertical space available. While the CBA1048/Fan Tray/Rectifier Shelf assembly is 6 RU high, an additional 1 RU of empty space should be allowed below the Fan Tray to provide unobstructed airflow for the Fan Tray intake.

  1. Make sure the wires of the DC/Alarm cable are coiled up and secured out of the way.
  2. Hold the CBA1048/Fan Tray/Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket assembly at the top of a 7-RU space in the rack and attach with rack screws. Do not tighten the screws all the way
  3. Loosen the four screws attaching the CBA1048, Rectifier Shelf, and Fan Tray to the Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket and from below, push the bottom right edge of the Fan Tray upward until the CBA1048/Fan Tray/Rectifier Shelf Mounting Bracket assembly is straight across (does not sag in the middle). Tighten all rack screws securely.
