Installation
Installation Overview
This page provides guidance on installing the Tellabs ONT203W and any required accessories. The procedure involves the following steps:
- Physically mount the ONT and accessories
- Connect the ONT to DC power
- Connect the optical fiber cable to the ONT
- Secure and dress fibers and cabling
- Verify the Installation
Note 1: If the upstream equipment (OLT) is not yet operational, it is impossible to complete the final step of the procedure at the time of installation. Nevertheless, the ONT is not considered to be fully installed until this step is completed.
Note 2: When the ONT is first connected to the PON, the PON will download and install software on the OLT. This process can take up to 20 minutes to complete. If multiple ONTs need to be installed at the site, the next physical install can proceed.
Installation Procedure
The ONT203W is designed to be installed in a wall, similar to how AC wall outlets are installed. It can be installed using a low-voltage mounting bracket, or a single gang or dual gang utility box, depending on local building practices and customer preference.
The ONT203W receives DC power using a 2-pin power connector, located on the back of the ONT, which is terminated to a centralized remote power source.
Use the following procedures to install the ONT203W in the wall.

- Insert the ONT Module inside the Power Module, engaging the 6 pins on the back of the ONT Module with the pin connector inside the Power Module, depicted below. Ensure that the 4 plastic clips on the ONT Module are aligned with the power module for a tight fit.

- Using a small screwdriver, tighten the 2 corner screws on the ONT Module to secure both modules.
- Strip the insulation from the copper wire and then insert the bare copper wire into the 2-pin male input connector on the ONT module.
- Use a small screwdriver to tighten the screws to grip the copper wire as shown below.

- Observe the positive and negative polarity label above the input connector socket for proper polarity orientation.
- Remove the protective plug from the fiber compartment unit on the ONT Module. Clean the end of the fiber connector according to standard practices.
- Route the fiber end so that it inserts at the entry point of the ONT Module.

- Route the fiber through the cable guide, looping it 180°, and then insert the fiber connector into the socket, shown in the illustration.
- Plug the fiber connector inside the fiber compartment unit until an audible click is heard.
- After both modules are mounted, press the bottom of the faceplate cover down first onto the ONT Module, aligning the cutout on the cover with the plastic label located on the ONT Module that identifies the ONT’s Serial Number.
- Slide the top of the faceplate cover so that the plastic locks on the top and the bottom also snaps into place.

- After installation, indicate the unit’s physical location using the two identification slots on the faceplate cover.
Cable Management
Tellabs recommends that the customer uses cable wall mount clips (3M Command Round Cord Clips) to route the RJ45 cables from the ONT Module. In many environments (schools for example) the cables, if left floating freely, can be damaged by someone tripping on them or a chair grabbing the cable.
The wall mount clips are attached to the side of the ONT with the cable entrance to the wall side to offer the RJ45 cable both strain relief and protection.

Verifying the Installation
Once the installation, software download, and bootup is complete, use the following procedure to verify ONT status:
Note: During boot up, the PON LED will flash red and may progress to solid red for approximately 10 seconds before flashing green while downloading software. Do not cycle power or change the ONT if flashing green. Check with a systems administrator for software download status before proceeding.
- Verify that the PON LED is Solid Green, indicating that the ONT is up and active on the network.
- If the PON LED is Solid Green, no further installation work is necessary.
- If the PON LED is not Solid Green, contact the systems administrator for activation assistance. Have the following information available:
- Vendor: Tellabs
- ONT Model Number: 203W
- ONT Serial Number: Located on a sticker on the bottom of the ONT
Services are provisioned and turned up remotely via the Panorama PON EMS. Services may have been provisioned in advance. If they were not, it may be necessary to contact the systems administrator to complete service activation.
