Fan Tray

Two fan trays are available, a 23-inch for the Tellabs 1150 (MDS5) shelf, and a 19-inch for the Tellabs 1150E (MDS7) shelf. Each are installed in pairs, one above and one below the MDS shelf. When two MDS shelves are installed together in a rack, it is not necessary to install a third fan tray. One fan tray would be temporarily removed and relocated to either above or below the second MDS shelf, as shown in the following illustration.

Procedures are included for:

  • 23 Inch Fan Tray
  • 19 Inch Fan Tray
  • Tellabs 1150 MDS5 Shelf:

23 Inch Fan Tray

Use the following procedure to install the 23-inch Fan Tray:

  1. Unpack the fan tray and inspect for any apparent damage.



     
  2. Connect a chassis ground cable to the ground terminal stud on the rear of the fan tray.
  3. Before mounting the shelf, grind or otherwise remove the powder coating from one of the mounting screw holes on the rack rail, to accept the chassis ground cable.
  4. If this is the first fan tray to be installed, position the tray with a minimum of 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) air space above the tray.
  5. Insert four #12-24 screws in the mounting ears of the shelf and secure the mounting screws.
  6. Connect the ground cable from Step 2 under the screw prepared in Step 3.
  7. Locate the Fan Tray Power Alarm cable.



     
  8. Does the power cable appear as shown above, with two ferrite beads attached?
    • If YES, go to Step 9.
    • If NO, attach the ferrite beads and tie wraps as follows:
      1. Locate the ferrite beads and tie wraps in the spare parts bag accompanying the fan tray.
      2. Open and attach one of the ferrite beads approximately 2 inches (5 cm) from the P1 connector.
      3. Attach one tie wrap to the cable between the ferrite bead and the P1 connector as shown above.
      4. Open and attach the second ferrite bead adjacent to the first.
      5. Attach a second tie wrap to secure the two ferrite beads in place.
      6. Attach a third tie wrap approximately 4 inches (10 cm) from the terminal lugs to secure the "A" and "B" power pairs.
  9. Connect P1 to J1 on the rear of the fan tray.
  10. Route the power/alarm cable to the rear of the DC Rectifier Shelf.
  11. Route the cable up through the opening on the rear of the DC Rectifier Shelf to the GMT Output and Return terminal strip.
  12. Connect P2 and P3 to the next available GMT Output and Return terminal strip positions.



     
  13. Connect P4 and P5 to the next available GMT Output and Return terminal strip positions.
  14. Do not connect alarm leads, blue/white  white/blue pair, at this time.
    Information Note: The alarm leads, blue/white white/blue pair, connect to the AMU1 when installed in the MDS5 shelf, or a third-party alarm system, as indicated in the illustration in Step 7.
  15. Is this the first of the two 23-inch fan trays to be installed?

19 Inch Fan Tray

Use the following procedure to install the 19-inch Fan Tray:

  1. Unpack the fan tray and inspect for any apparent damage.


     
  2. Connect the chassis ground cable to the ground terminal stud on the left side of the fan tray.
  3. Before mounting the shelf, grind or otherwise remove the powder coating from one of the mounting screw holes on the rack rail, to accept the chassis ground cable.
  1. Insert four #12–24 screws in the mounting ears of the shelf and secure the mounting screws.
  2. Connect the ground cable from Step 2 under the screw prepared in Step 3.
  3. Locate the Fan Tray Power Alarm cable.
  4. Does the power cable appear as shown above, with two ferrite beads attached?


     
    • If YES, go to Step 9.
    • If NO, attach the ferrite beads and tie wraps as follows:
      1. Locate the ferrite beads and tie wraps in the spare parts bag accompanying the fan tray.
      2. Open and attach one of the ferrite beads approximately 2 inches (5 cm) from the P1 connector.
      3. Attach one tie wrap to the cable between the ferrite bead and the P1 connector as shown above.
      4. Open and attach the second ferrite bead adjacent to the first.
      5. Attach a second tie wrap to secure the two ferrite beads in place.
      6. Attach a third tie wrap approximately 4 inches (10 cm) from the terminal lugs to secure the "A" and "B" power pairs.
  5. Connect P1 to J1 on the rear of the fan tray.
  6. Route the power/alarm cable to the rear of the DC Rectifier Shelf.
  7. Route the cable up through the opening on the rear of the DC Rectifier Shelf to the GMT Output and Return terminal strip.
  8. Connect P2 and P3 to the next available GMT Output and Return terminal strip positions.


     
  1. Connect P4 and P5 to the next available GMT Output and Return terminal strip positions.
  2. Do not connect the J1 "Alarm" connector at this time.
    Information Note: The "Alarm" connector, J1, as indicated in the illustration in Step 7, connects to the ‘Y-cable’ installed following the installation of the second 19-Inch Fan Tray.
  1. Is this the first of the two 19-inch fan trays to be installed?
  2. In the MDS7 parts kit, locate the alarm "Y" cable, as shown below.


     
  1. Connect P1 of the "Y" cable to J1 "Alarm" of the alarm cable of the first (upper) fan tray.
  2. Connect P2 of the "Y" cable to J1 "Alarm" of the alarm cable of the second (lower) fan tray.
  3.  Connect P3 to the fan alarm connector on the MDS7, as shown below,
  4. Go to Completing the Installation.

Tellabs 1150 MDS5 Shelf:

Use the following procedure to install the Tellabs 1150 MDS5 Shelf:

Information Note 1: If a second MDS5 shelf is to be installed in the same rack, this shelf must be mounted immediately above or beneath the first MDS5 shelf. One of the 23-Inch Fan Trays must be moved to accommodate installation of the second MDS5. Reinstall the 23-Inch Fan Tray following installation of the second MDS5 shelf (refer to 23-Inch FanTray).
Information Note 2: When installing an MDS5 shelf, a 23-inch Fan Tray (refer to 23-Inch Fan Tray must be installed above and below the MDS5 shelf.

 

Refer to Figure 3 for a typical Tellabs 1150 (MDS5) installation. 

  1. Determine the mounting location for the MDS5 shelf, beneath the first 23-inch fan tray.
  2. Chassis ground connections are made using double-hole lugs on ¼"-20 studs with 5/8" centers. Alternatively, a single-hole lug, with a star washer can be used. Refer to the following illustration and construct the chassis ground cable using a 6" − #10AWG stranded wire with a yellow stripe on a green sheath.
  3. Attach the chassis ground cable to one of the 1/4" x 20 stud(s) located on the left side panel of the MDS5 shelf using the nuts and washers provided.
  4. Before mounting the shelf, grind or otherwise remove any paint or powder coating from one of the mounting screw holes on the front left rack rail, to accept the chassis ground cable.
  1. Insert the shelf into the desired position and push it straight back until the mounting brackets are flush with the mounting rails.
  2. Secure the shelf with four #12-24 mounting screws, inserting the two upper mounting screws first. Do not tighten the mounting screws until Step 7 has been completed.
    Information Note: When inserting the lower-left mounting screw, ensure the frame ground is installed on the hole prepared in Step 4 before inserting it into the equipment frame.
  1. Insert the two remaining screws into the bottom mounting holes and tighten as required. Tighten the two upper mounting screws to ensure the shelf is secure.
  2. Locate the MDS5 Power and Digital Ground Cable Assembly (see Figure below).

  3. Connect P1 and P241 to J3 and J241 on the MDS5 shelf (see Figure below).

  1. Dress and route the cable assemblies up the equipment rail to the DC Rectifier Shelf.
  2. Refer to Grounding Considerations to determine where to terminate the Digital Ground (DGND).
  3. Refer to Table 3 and connect the stub ends of the -48Vdc leads to two 40A (-48V A and -48V B) circuit breaker positions at the DC Rectifier Shelf.

    Information Note: The DC Rectifier Shelf must be located within 14 ft (4.25m) of the MDS5 shelf.

  1. Go to 23-Inch Fan Tray and install the second fan shelf either above or beneath the MDS5 shelf, as appropriate.
