OLT-mini Plus Card Cage

The Tellabs 1048 CBA is a compact card cage with a PCB backplane designed for Tellabs 1000 Series plug-in cards. It has four common control slots for processing and power cards, and 10 multipurpose slots for narrowband and broadband cards.

The CBA1048 is designed to be installed in either an optional 12-inch Wall-Mount Swing Rack, or in a 19-inch standard equipment rack using an optional Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket.

AC power for the CBA1048 can be from a Rectifier Shelf containing one Rectifier Module, or two Rectifier Modules for redundant DC power.

Cooling for cards installed in the CBA1048 card cage is provided by an optional Fan Tray that mounts below the card cage. The fans in the Fan Tray are temperature-controlled variable-speed units for quiet, efficient operation and are alarmed.

Information Note: Tellabs recommends that a Fan Tray always be used to ensure adequate cooling of cards installed in a shelf card cage. Overheated cards may exhibit reduced reliability and shorter service life.

The Tellabs 1048 CBA is designed for use as a single-shelf RST and is not intended to be expanded. If there is the possibility that more than 8 service slots will eventually be needed, then the standard Tellabs 1000 MSAP CBA should be considered, instead.

Information Note: The CBA1048 is also sold as part of a kit containing the CBA1048 card cage, a Rectifier Shelf with one Rectifier Module and AC cord, a Fan Tray, and a DC Cable Assembly with fuse block. This kit is shipped in separate boxes and must be assembled before use.

Wall-Mount Swing Rack

The Wall-Mount Swing Rack is a compact 12-inch wide equipment rack that attaches to a wall or other suitable surface that can support its weight with the CBA1048 card cage, plug-in cards, Rectifier Shelf and Rectifier Modules, and Fan Tray installed (about 40 lbs, 18.1 kg). The swing rack, when fully loaded with accessories and plug-in cards, passed the NEBS earthquake tests.

The Wall-Mount Swing Rack is made of heavy-gauge zinc-plated steel, with solid sides and open top and bottom. It attaches to the wall using a heavy-duty continuous (piano) hinge on the left side and three mounting brackets on the right side. Three captive thumb screws on the right side secure the rack to the mounting brackets in the normal operating position.

When the three thumbscrews are loosened and disengaged from the wall mounting brackets, the continuous hinge allows the rack to swing out 90 degrees for easy access to the back of the equipment installed in the swing rack.

A grounding bar is preinstalled on the inside of the left side panel, near the rear. Mounting holes, PEM nuts, and screws are provided near the grounding bar to attach a fuse block (part of an optional cable assembly) for AC-powered installations.

The swing rack has room for the Tellabs 1048 CBA card cage in the middle, and a Rectifier Shelf above and a Fan Tray below the CBA1048 card cage (both optional). Standard 12-24 Telco rack screws secure the equipment to the rack.

Inside the Wall Mount Swing Rack Box

The Wall-Mount Swing Rack, when ordered as a separate accessory, is shipped flat and must be assembled before installation.

Information Note: When the CBA1048 is ordered as a complete, pre-assembled unit, assembly of the swing rack is not required.

All parts and fasteners needed for assembly are included in the box:

  • Wall-Mount Swing Rack left side panel and right side panel, with a grounding block pre-installed on the inside of the left side panel
  • Four channel-stock crossmembers with a PEM nut at each end
  • Eight screws (12-24, 5/16 Hex/Slot head) with captive star washers to secure the cross members to the left and right side panels
  • Three wall mounting brackets (pre-attached to the right side panel)
  • Three thumb screws (holding the mounting brackets to the side panel)
  • Paper template showing the clear area on the wall required and the mounting hole locations
Information Note: Fasteners for attaching the rack to a wall or other surface are not included and must be selected for the wall material at the installation location and sourced locally.

If multiple Wall-Mount Swing Racks are ordered, they may be packed in the same shipping container, or be shipped separately.

Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket for 19-inch Racks

The Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket allows the Tellabs 1048 CBA card cage, Rectifier Shelf, and a Fan Tray to be installed in a standard 19-inch equipment rack. It is made from heavy-gauge zinc-plated steel and has mounting holes in the appropriate locations.

The CBA1048 card cage, Rectifier Shelf, and Fan Tray attach to the left-side equipment rack rail in the typical fashion. The right side of the CBA1048 card cage, Rectifier Shelf, and Fan Tray (if used) attach to the left side of the Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket. And the right side of the Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket attaches to the right-side equipment rack rail in the typical fashion.

Slots punched near the bottom of the mounting bracket allow cables from the front of the CBA1048 card cage, Rectifier Shelf, and Fan Tray to be routed to the rear without taking up additional vertical rack space. The rear surface of the mounting bracket provides an area to manage excess cable lengths using magnetic cable anchors.

Fan Tray

The Fan Tray is 1 RU tall and 10 inches wide and contains four 4 5/8-inch variable-speed fans and a controller board. Its purpose is to blow air upward through the CBA1048 card cage to cool the installed cards. Accordingly, it goes in the lowest position of the Wall-Mount Swing Rack or below the CBA1048 card cage when installed in a standard equipment rack using an optional Equipment Rack Mounting Bracket.

Power for the Fan Tray comes from either one or two Rectifier Modules in a Rectifier Shelf installed at the top of the Wall-Mount Swing Rack (all optional), or from existing -48-VDC power in the room. When using dual DC power sources, if one source should fail, the Fan Tray switches over to the alternate source.

The internal controller board adjusts the speed of the fans based on the ambient air temperature flowing into the fan intakes, and sends an alarm signal to the CBA1048 card cage backplane PCB if a fan should fail.

There is a 14-pin Molex connector socket, two LED indicators, and a membrane push-button switch on the front panel.

The connector on the Fan Tray front panel is the input for -48-VDC power and the  alarm output to the CBA1048 when a fan fails.

A cable assembly (optional) connects -48-VDC power from one or two DC sources to the CBA1048 card cage and the Fan Tray. It also connects the Fan Tray alarm output to the CBA1048 backplane fan alarm input.

The Status LED indicator on the front panel lights solid green when the Fan Tray is operating normally.

The Alarm LED indicator on the front panel lights solid red when the Fan Tray is in an alarm condition.

The Test pushbutton on the front panel runs a self-test on the Fan Tray when pressed and released.

The Fan Tray box contains:

  • Fan Tray, fully assembled

If multiple Fan Trays are ordered, they may be packed in the same shipping container, or be shipped separately.

Rectifier Shelf

The Rectifier Shelf is 1 RU tall and 10 inches wide, and has space for two 600-Watt, hot-swappable, Rectifier Modules (sold separately). It mounts in the top location of the Wall-Mount Swing Rack, above the Tellabs 1048 CBA card cage.

The Rectifier Shelf has two slots for slide-in Rectifier Modules and a standard IEC AC input power connector for each slot on the rear panel. AC input power for each slot passes through a line filter inside the shelf. DC output power from each Rectifier Module passes through a ferrite bead on the way to separate DC output connectors on the rear panel of the Rectifier Shelf.

A perforated front panel in front of each Rectifier Module slot allows cooling air for the Rectifier Module to be drawn in. Perforations in the Rectifier Shelf rear panel allow the Rectifier Module cooling air to escape into the room.

Rectifier Modules are installed onto the Rectifier Shelf from the front, after removing the front panels. The Rectifier Modules have a PCB edge extending about a half inch from the Rectifier Module rear panel that engages edge connectors at the back of the slot when the Rectifier Module is fully inserted.

If two Rectifier Modules are installed in the shelf and one fails, the CBA1048 and Fan Tray (if installed) continue to operate normally. The failed Rectifier Module can be removed from the Rectifier Shelf and replaced while the power is on. Once the failed Rectifier Module is replaced, DC power redundancy is restored to the system.

Information Note: A single Rectifier Module installed in the Rectifier Shelf has sufficient capacity to power the Fan Tray and the CBA1048 with any combination of plug-in cards installed. A second Rectifier Module installed in the shelf simply provides a redundant DC power source for the system.

The Rectifier Shelf box contains:

  • Rectifier Shelf, fully assembled (no Rectifier Modules installed)

Rectifier Modules

Rectifier Modules for the Rectifier Shelf are hot-swappable and convert AC line power to 53.5 VDC at up to about 16 Amps, maximum. With a 120 VAC input, the Rectifier Module is limited to 600 Watts output.

One is sufficient to run the Fan Tray and CBA1048 with any combination of plug-in cards installed. A second Rectifier Module can be installed in the Rectifier Shelf to provide a redundant DC power source for the system.

Rectifier Modules are installed onto the Rectifier Shelf from the front. They have a PCB edge extending about a half inch from the Rectifier Module rear panel that engages edge connectors in the back of the slot when the Rectifier is fully inserted.

A small fan just inside the Rectifier Module front cover draws cooling air in through the front panel and blows it through the Rectifier Module and out of the module rear panel. Perforations in the Rectifier Shelf rear panel allow the Rectifier Module cooling air to escape into the room.

If two Rectifier Modules are installed in the Rectifier Shelf and one fails, the CBA1048 and Fan Tray (if installed) continue to operate normally. The failed Rectifier Module can be removed from the Rectifier Shelf and replaced while the power is on. Once the failed Rectifier Module is replaced, DC power redundancy is restored to the system.

The Rectifier Module monitors itself for under- and over-voltage output, output overload, and over-temperature conditions. If any parameter is found to be out of range, the Rectifier Module shuts off.

  • One AC cord with standard IEC connector (to connect to the socket on the Rectifier Shelf rear panel)

If multiple Rectifier Modules are ordered, they may be packed in the same shipping container, or be shipped separately.

EMI Front Cover

The EMI Front Cover reduces electromagnetic emissions emanating from the front of the Tellabs 1048 CBA and helps direct airflow from the Fan Tray (optional) upward through the plug-in cards installed in the CBA1048.

The cover is a heavy-gauge sheet of zinc-plated steel with a hinge on the left side and two latches on the right side. Holes in the hinge leaf line up with equipment rack rail mounting holes in the CBA1048 card cage. Latches on the right side engage studs pressed into the CBA1048 card cage frame.

When unlatched, the EMI Front Cover can be swung in about a 200-degree arc, giving full access to the card slots in the CBA1048. Holes punched into the cover directly over the CBA1048 card slots allow the cards and LED indicators to be visible when the cover is closed.

The EMI Front Cover box contains:

  • One EMI Front Cover assembly

If multiple EMI Front Covers are ordered, they may be packed in the same shipping container, or be shipped separately.

DC Alarm Fuse Block Cable Assembly

The DC/Alarm/Fuse Block Cable Assembly connects the DC output(s) of the Rectifier Shelf to the CBA1048 and Fan Tray (optional), and the Fan Tray alarm output to the CBA1048 fan alarm input. It is intended for use with the CBA1048 and Rectifier Shelf (optional) installed in the Wall-Mount Swing Rack.

An in-line fuse block assembly is part of the cable and attaches to the inside of the left panel of the Wall-Mount Swing Rack with two screws. The cable ships with fuses pre-installed.

The DC/Alarm/Fuse Block Cable Assembly has the following connectors/terminations:

  • Two four-pin Molex connectors to mate with the DC power A and DC power B connectors on the Rectifier Shelf rear panel
