Preparation
Installation Planning
The installation must seek to balance user preference with the environmental, power, and cabling requirements of the ONT and any subtending equipment. The following items need to be planned for prior to installing the ONT.
Physical Mounting Options
The ONT140C/140CL can be deployed in a wide variety of ways. It can be installed in most locations; from desktops and flat surfaces to wall and under-surface mounting, or integrated into modular office furniture.
The ONT140C is plenum rated and can be installed in plenum spaces as well as racked in communication closets. The ONT design, optional mounting hardware and accessories provide options to fit most needs.
Optical Fiber Location
When selecting the installation location, it is important to consider the location of the fiber cable drop. Because fiber cables are not typically spliced or terminated in the field, it is important that the cable is long enough to reach the ONT. It is better for the cable to be too long than for it to be too short by any amount. For this reason, there is normally excess fiber to manage after the connections have been made. An optional mounting bracket with an integrated fiber management system is available and can be used to store and protect this slack from accidental damage.
Environmental Requirements
The ONT140C/140CL operates at temperatures ranging from 32°~104°F (0°~40°C) with relative humidity ranging from 5%to 85%.
Power Requirements
| Note: The PoE Switch is only active on ONT140C, the ONT140CL will receive and throughput power. |
The ONT140C/140CL requires 48~56 VDC at up to a maximum of 1.38 amps (at full power load). This DC power can be obtained locally, using an optional AC power adapter or remotely from a bulk 54-volt DC power supply. The amount of power delivered by the ONT varies according to the power option selected. Each power option requires planning related to the accessories required and power source location.
The ONT140C/140CL consumes approximately 12 Watts of power when not delivering remote power. The ONT140C/140CL provides remote power to connected devices and supports the 802.3af and 802.3at standards, including Class-4 negotiations. The amount of power available for connected devices depends on the DC power input, class limitations, and apportionment by port as shown in the specifications table. The ONT140C/140CL can deliver up to 63W of remote power or by the optional AC wall power adapter.
To use remote power, a cable must be run from the remote bulk DC power supply to the ONT140C/140CL. The cable is typically routed alongside the optical fiber cable. Composite cables are available that combine the optical fiber and DC power wiring inside a single jacket. Remote DC power is delivered to the ONT140C/140CL through the RJ-45 connector located on the rear face of the unit. The following table shows the pinouts of the RJ-45 connector for 1, 2, or 4 power pairs using 22AWG wire:
| Pin | Wire Color |
1 Pair @ 22AWG 141m (462.5ft) |
2 Pair @ 22AWG 282m (925.2ft) |
4 Pair @ 22AWG564m (1850.4ft) |

| Warning 1: It is recommended, when powering the ONT140C/140CL from a remote bulk power supply, that power cables are cut to length. If using a fixed length cable (e.g., a pre-connectorized hybrid Copper/Fiber cable), loosely coil any excess cable to avoid overheating. |
| Warning 2: Do not bend the fiber optic cable to a diameter smaller than 7.5cm/3 inches. Doing so may damage the fiber or prevent the signal from passing through properly. |
ONT140C/140CL - Maximum Remote Power
| DC Input | DC Max Remote Power Output |
|---|---|
| AC Adapter (optional) | ~63W |
| Remote bulk DC power | ~63W (US Electrical Code limits remote low voltage DC power to 100 VA) |
| Note: The AC adapter and AC adapter line cords are optional accessories, available from Tellabs separately at extra cost. Contact your Tellabs sales representative for details and ordering information. |
Tools and Supplies
The tools and supplies needed for a ONT140C/140CL installation vary depending on the location and type of installation. The items listed below assume that the optical fiber cable drop (and remote bulk DC power cable, if used) are already installed.
Tools
The following list of tools should cover the typical ONT140C/140CL installation:
- Screwdrivers or driver bits
- Screwdrivers or driver bits to fit the wood or machine screws, dry wall anchor screws, or masonry anchor screws that will be used in mounting the ONT to a wall or other surface
- Medium slot screwdriver
- Power drill and drill bits sized appropriately for screw pilot holes, and drywall and masonry anchor holes (sizes required will depend on fastener selection)
- Digital multimeter with test leads (a DMM with only basic functions will do)
- Optical Power Meter
- Fiber Optic Inspection Microscope
- Multipurpose fiber optic cleaning tool with bulkhead adapter
Supplies
The following list of supplies should cover the typical ONT140C/140CL installation (supplies are locally sourced):
- Fasteners
- Select screws, drywall anchors, and masonry anchors of the appropriate size for the weight of the ONT. Ensure that the heads are large enough, so they do not pull through the mounting holes of the brackets.
- Cable ties (Nylon and Velcro)
- Vinyl electrical tape
- Sharpie or other fine-point permanent marker
Unpacking and Inspection
The Tellabs ONT and related accessories may arrive in a single shipping container, or in multiple containers. When unpacking the boxes, check each item against the installation work order and for obvious shipping damage. If a shortage or damage is found, contact the Tellabs Warranty/Repair and Return Center immediately.
A reusable-adhesive label with the ONT serial number (and barcode representation) printed on it is affixed to the outside of the box. This label can be peeled off and placed on the ONT case or in other suitable place near the ONT. This label provides serial number visibility if the permanent label on the ONT is hidden by the installation. The serial number may be needed to provision the ONT using the Panorama PON Element Management System (EMS).
