Replace a Quad Optical Interface Unit (QOIU7)
Laser Safety
Warning 1! Personnel handling fiber optic cables must be trained for laser safety.
Warning 2! Optical Fibers emit invisible laser radiation. Avoid direct exposure to the beam. Never look into the end of a Fiber or into a Fiber connector on a cable or a device. Permanent eye damage or blindness can occur quickly from laser radiation.
Fiber Optic Cable
Ensure that the fiber connectors are properly cleaned per local standards. Dirty connectors may result in inaccurate measurements.
Caution 1: Fiber optic cable installation and maintenance should only be performed by trained service personnel.
Caution 2: Do not bend the fiber optic cable to a diameter smaller than 7.5cm/3 inches. Doing so may damage the fiber or prevent the signal from passing through properly.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Observe and follow all ESD instructions while handling Tellabs plug-in equipment.
Caution! The Tellabs plug-in equipment uses semiconductor devices that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove a plug-in from a protective packing box or equipment rack until the time of installation or replacement. To equalize the static charge on the plug-in, establish a body path to the ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to an ESD ground. [If storing or shipping the plug-in becomes necessary, place the plug-in in a conductive shipping box to prevent static buildup.]
Apply the following precautions:
- Use grounded wrist straps, table mats, floor mats
- Handle static-sensitive devices in the nonconductive areas
- Place static-sensitive cards into an antistatic plastic bag
- Use protective ESD-sensitive packing and shipping bags when returning repairable components
Procedure
To replace a Quad Optical Interface Unit (QOIU7):
- If not already open, open the cover of the Tellabs 1150 MDS5 OLT (see Figure 1).
Figure 1: Tellabs 1150 MDS5

- Locate the failed Quad Optical Interface Unit (QOIU).
- Disconnect and cap the fiber jumpers from the QOIU faceplate.
- Rotate the upper and lower card ejectors to eject the QOIU from the backplane connector.
- Remove the QOIU from the MDS5 and place in an ESD protective package.
- Unpack and inspect the replacement QOIU for any apparent damage (see Figure 2).
Figure 2: Quad Optical Interface Unit (QOIU7)

- Carefully insert the card into the upper and lower card guides until the card contacts the backplane connector. Then apply equal pressure on both upper and lower ejectors.
- Upon insertion, the STAT LED illuminates RED while performing internal power-up diagnostics. Upon successful completion of the power-up diagnostics, the STAT LED blinks GREEN at a 0.5 second interval while initializing. Upon completion of initialization, the STAT LED illuminates solid GREEN.
- Did the STAT LED sequence described in Step 8?
- If YES, go to Step 10.
- If NO, remove the card and replace it with a known good unit. If the problem persists, contact the next level of support.
- Uncap and clean, according to local practices, the quad-fiber jumpers removed in Step 3.
- Reinstall the fiber jumpers removed in Step 3.
