Replace an Ethernet Switch Unit (ESU2)
Laser Safety
| Warning! Personnel handling fiber optic cables must be trained for laser safety. |
| Warning! Optical Fibers emit invisible laser radiation. Avoid direct exposure to the beam. Never look into the end of a Fiber or into a Fiber connector on a cable or a device. Permanent eye damage or blindness can occur quickly from laser radiation. |
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Observe and follow all ESD instructions while handling Tellabs plug-in equipment.
| Caution! The Tellabs plug-in equipment uses semiconductor devices that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove a plug-in from a protective packing box or equipment rack until time of installation or replacement. To equalize the static charge on the plug-in, establish a body path to ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to a ESD ground. If storing or shipping the plug-in becomes necessary, place the plug-in in a conductive shipping box to prevent static buildup.] |
Apply the following precautions:
- Use grounded wrist straps, table mats, floor mats
- Handle static-sensitive devices by the nonconductive areas
- Place static-sensitive cards into an antistatic plastic bag
- Use protective ESD-sensitive packing and shipping bags, when returning repairable components
The following materials are required to complete this procedure:
- Ethernet Switch Unit (ESU2)
- A personal computer (PC) with serial communication software, (i.e. HyperTerminal), installed on a laptop computer.
- Serial cable with DB-9 connectors.
- Work order, with Ethernet Switch Unit (ESU) provisioning parameters.
Use the following procedure to replace an ESU2.
- If not already open, open the cover of the Tellabs 1150 MDS5 or MDS7 (see Figure 1).
Figure 1: Tellabs 1150 MDS5 with ESU2 (ESU A)

- Locate the failed ESU (ESU A or ESU B).
- Remove and cap the Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) fibers from the Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) and/or Gigabit Small Form-Factor Pluggable (XFP) module(s) in the ESU.
- Lower the locking bail on the SFP/XFP module(s) and remove all SFP/XFP modules from the ESU and set aside.
- Rotate the upper and lower card ejectors to eject the ESU from the backplane.
- Remove the failed ESU from the shelf and place in an ESD protective package.
- Unpack and inspect the replacement ESU for any apparent damage (see Figure 2).
Figure 2: Ethernet Switching Unit (ESU2)

- Carefully insert the card into the upper and lower card guides until the card contacts the backplane connector. Then apply equal pressure on both the upper and lower ejectors.
- Upon insertion, the STAT LED illuminates RED while performing internal power up diagnostics. Upon successful completion of the power up diagnostics, the STAT LED blinks GREEN at a 0.5 second interval while initializing. Upon completion of initialization, the STAT LED illuminates solid GREEN.
- Does the STAT LED illuminate as indicated in Step 9?
- If YES, go to Step 11.
- If NO, replace the ESU with a known good unit and repeat this procedure from Step 7. If the problem persists, contact the next level of support for technical assistance.
- On the Windows desktop, select Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal.
- Close the default Connection Description dialog.
- In the Open dialog, select the session file (esu.ht), and click Open.
- Is a HyperTerminal session esu.ht listed?
- If YES, go to Step 20.
- If NO, go to Step 15.
- In the HyperTerminal window, select File > New Connection. The New Connection dialog is displayed.
- In the New Connection dialog, type esu.ht. Click OK. The Connect To dialog is displayed.
- In the Connect To dialog, select the Connect using: pull-down. In the pull-down list select COM1. Click OK. The COM1 Properties dialog is displayed.
- In the COM1 Properties dialog, select each of the pull-downs and set the following options:
- Bits per second - 38400
- Data bits: - 8
- Parity: - None
- Stop bits: - 1
- Flow control: - None
- Click OK to add the options.
- Connect a serial cable from the COM1 I/O port (DB9) on the computer to the RS232 DB9 port on the ESU card. When the connection is established, the following prompt is displayed:
MontaVista(R) Linux(R) Professional Edition 3.1 Linux/ppc 2.4.20_mvl31-ESU_KERNEL_V000011 username: _
|
Note: At the ESU serial port, the user account must have administrative privileges to perform this procedure. The only exception to this rule occurs when an ESU is booted with no SFP modules in the faceplate SFP slots, as described below:
|
- At the username: prompt, type craft, and press ENTER.
- At the password: prompt, type adsl2+, and press ENTER. The Craft Menu is displayed.

____________________ERASEDB will ERASE all data in the NE database and return to initial factory default settings.ERASEDB will be SERVICE AFFECTING to ALL LINES within the NE.Do you also wish to erase the User Database (Y/N) [N]:_Do you also wish to erase the SSL certificates (Y/N) [N]:______________________

Note: When the user database is erased, the factory default user accounts and passwords (i.e., admin/tellabs and craft/adsl2+) are restored on the ESU. - Type Y (to erase the turnup settings,) and press ENTER. The following prompt is displayed:From the Turnup Maintenance Menu, type 3, and press ENTER. The following prompt is displayed.
_____________________Do you also wish to erase the Turnup Settings (Y/N) [N]:______________________

Note: When the turnup settings are erased, the ESU must be reconfigured by logging in at the ESU serial port. -
Type Y (to erase the turnup settings,) and press ENTER. The following prompt isdisplayed:_____________________Are you sure you wish to continue (Y/N) [N]:______________________
- Type Y, and press ENTER to proceed with erasing the ESU database.
- Re-install the SFP and/or XFP modules removed in Step 4.
- Re-install the Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) fiber jumpers removed in Step 3.

Note 1: When inserting fibers into the SFP or XFP module, the transmit side is the top port and the receive side is the bottom port.
Note 2: The LC connector on the fiber jumper locks into the SFP or XFP module, similar to an RJ-45 connector. When the connector is properly inserted, an audible click can be heard. - Does the SFP or XFP LOW LED illuminate Dark (indicating a good signal) and the LINK LED illuminate Green (link is up)?
- If YES, STOP. YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROCEDURE.
- If NO, replace the ESU with a known good unit or contact the next level of support for technical assistance. Refer to Contacting Technical Support.
