Replacing the Optical Fan Assembly (OFA1)

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

Observe and follow all ESD instructions while handling Tellabs plug-in equipment.

Danger  Caution! The Tellabs plug-in equipment uses semiconductor devices that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove a plug-in from a protective packing box or equipment rack until time of installation or replacement. To equalize the static charge on the plug-in, establish a body path to ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to a ESD ground. If storing or shipping the plug-in becomes necessary, place the plug-in in a conductive shipping box to prevent static buildup.]

Apply the following precautions:

  • Use grounded wrist straps, table mats, floor mats
  • Handle static-sensitive devices by the nonconductive areas
  • Place static-sensitive cards into an antistatic plastic bag
  • Use protective ESD-sensitive packing and shipping bags, when returning repairable components

Use the following procedure to replace a failed Optical Fan Assembly (OFA1).

Figure 2: Optical Fan Assembly (OFA1)

  1. If not already removed, remove the cover by sliding the two cover latches toward the center and lifting the cover from the shelf (see Figure 1).
  2. Connect an approved Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) strap to a ground on the equipment rack.
  3. Using a screwdriver, loosen the two screws securing the OFA1 to the shelf (see Figure 2).
  4. Grasp the handle on the OFA1 and pull the faulty OFA1 straight out to remove it from the shelf.
  5. Place the OFA1 in an appropriate ESD protective package.
  6. Unpack the replacement OFA1 (see Figure. 2) and inspect for any apparent damage. If any damage is noted, notify the next level of support.
  7. Insert the OFA1 into the of the shelf.
  8. Slide the OFA1 in until it engages with the connectors on the shelf backplane.
  9. Does the STAT LED illuminate GREEN?
  • If YES, go to Step 10.
  • If NO, remove the OFA1 fan assembly and replace it with a new unit. Go to Step 6.
  1. Use a screwdriver and secure the OFA1 to the shelf.

STOP. YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROCEDURE.
