Replacing the Optical Fan Assembly (OFA1)
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Observe and follow all ESD instructions while handling Tellabs plug-in equipment.
| Caution! The Tellabs plug-in equipment uses semiconductor devices that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove a plug-in from a protective packing box or equipment rack until time of installation or replacement. To equalize the static charge on the plug-in, establish a body path to ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to a ESD ground. If storing or shipping the plug-in becomes necessary, place the plug-in in a conductive shipping box to prevent static buildup.] |
Apply the following precautions:
- Use grounded wrist straps, table mats, floor mats
- Handle static-sensitive devices by the nonconductive areas
- Place static-sensitive cards into an antistatic plastic bag
- Use protective ESD-sensitive packing and shipping bags, when returning repairable components
Use the following procedure to replace a failed Optical Fan Assembly (OFA1).
Figure 1: Tellabs 1134 RT with Cover Removed

Figure 2: Optical Fan Assembly (OFA1)

- If not already removed, remove the cover by sliding the two cover latches toward the center and lifting the cover from the shelf (see Figure 1).
- Connect an approved Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) strap to a ground on the equipment rack.
- Using a screwdriver, loosen the two screws securing the OFA1 to the shelf (see Figure 2).
- Grasp the handle on the OFA1 and pull the faulty OFA1 straight out to remove it from the shelf.
- Place the OFA1 in an appropriate ESD protective package.
- Unpack the replacement OFA1 (see Figure. 2) and inspect for any apparent damage. If any damage is noted, notify the next level of support.
- Insert the OFA1 into the of the shelf.
- Slide the OFA1 in until it engages with the connectors on the shelf backplane.
- Does the STAT LED illuminate GREEN?
- If YES, go to Step 10.
- If NO, remove the OFA1 fan assembly and replace it with a new unit. Go to Step 6.
- Use a screwdriver and secure the OFA1 to the shelf.
STOP. YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS PROCEDURE.
