Configuring SNMP
| Note: Prior to OLT configuration, system level configuration must be performed to enable direct SNMP agent interface communications to a third-party SNMP manager application. Refer to chapter, Series Optical LAN Management System Setting and the section, “Configuring the OLT SNMPv3 Agent Interface” for detailed procedures. |
Panorama PON supports an SNMPv3 Agent interface for the Optical LAN Terminals only. This interface enables SNMP alarm reporting via SNMP traps to various third-party SNMP manager applications that are available in the industry today.
Within an administrative domain, the snmpEngineID is the unique and unambiguous identifier of an SNMP agent/engine. There is one SNMP Agent/engine per OLT so there is one snmpEngineID per network element (ESU).
The format of the snmpEngineID uses the preferred structure as defined in RFC3411. To set the snmpEngineID, go to the Common Tree view and select the OLT.
To enable this functionality, several SNMP options must be configured at the OLT level.
| Alert: To perform this procedure, the user must be logged on at the Security Admin security level. |
In order for the OLT to send SNMP notifications (traps and information) to the appropriate SNMP manager application, the Notification Destination needs to be configured for each OLT (each SNMP Agent).
To enable the SNMP Agent and configure SNMP notifications:
- Logon to EMS and in the Network common tree, right-click on the target OLT and select Properties from the dropdown list.

- Select the SNMP tab.

- The Admin String field is populated with the IP address (default) of the SNMP Agent.
- Click the Manage SNMP User button to view and edit the SNMP Users.

- After modifying, deleting or adding SNMP agents, click the Close button.
-
For the Option buttons, select either IP Address (default) or Customized to use for the unique identifier portion of the snmpEngineID. If IP Address is selected, the IPv4 or IPv6 IP address of the network element is used.
- If Customized is selected for the SNMP Agent configuration option, enter a unique identifier text string for the network element, up to 27 characters. This creates an engine ID consisting of the Tellabs enterprise value of 8575 hex text format value and the text string in the "Admin String" text box.

Note: The Admin String should be unique for all SNMP agents that are accessed via a single SNMP manager in the network. It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that the string is unique as this is not enforced by the system.
- In the Trap Destination List area of the screen, click the Manage SNMP Parameter button. The SNMP Target Param Configuration screen is displayed.

- From the SNMP Target Param Configuration screen, select Add (or Modify, as appropriate). The following SNMP Target Parameters Edit screen is displayed:

- To add the SNMP target entry, update the fields as required and click the OK button. Refer to the table below for field descriptions.
Group/Property Field
Description
Name
This is the name of the object and is used to link to an entry in the Target address table.
SNMP Model
Select whether to send the notification in SNMPv1, SNMPv2c or SNMPv3.
SNMP User
Select from the available drop-down list.
This selection creates a link to the user information. For SNMPv1 and SNMPv2, this selection indirectly provides the community string to use. For SNMPv3, this links to a user name as well as authentication and privacy selections.
Storage Type
Accept the default type: NONVOLATILE (This entry indicates information persistence.)
- The final step is configuring the destination address and port. Fill in the fields under Trap Destination List.

- To configure the destination address and port, fill in the required fields for the selected entries (see table below for field descriptions).
Group/Property Field
Description
TrapHost Name
Enter a Label for the entry which represents the SNMP Notification Destination.
Parameter
Select from a drop-down list of available entries previously created for the SNMP Target parameters. This enables use of appropriate SNMP Parameters for the SNMP Notification Destination (SNMP Manager application).
IP Address
The IP address of where the trap or inform is to be sent. This can be either an IPv4 or IPv6 address.
Port
The UDP port of the destination of the notification. The default port value is 162.
Time-out
This value is only used for Informs. The default value is 1500.
Retry-count
The number of times to retry Informs.
Notify Type
Indicates if the notification should be a TRAP or and Inform. Typically this is a TRAP.
Enable
Select the Enable check box.
- Once the information has been entered, click the Apply button.
- A message dialog displays stating that the OLT properties were successfully modified.
- If no additional entries are to be made, click the Close.button.
