Both the MDS5 and MDS7 require an Ethernet Switch Unit (ESU11 or ESU2) that is the shelf controller. Additionally, the MDS5 supports optional redundant Timing Distribution Units (TDU1) and Alarm Maintenance Unit (AMU).
The TDU1 converts the analog composite clock timing signal to a digital timing signal which is then transported across the backplane to the Ethernet Switch Unit (ESU). The digitized timing signal can then be transported, by the ESU, to up to thirty-two (32) Internet Protocol (IP) addresses provisioned in Panorama PON.
The AMU1 provides alarm collection, reporting, and an audible alarm, as well as visual capabilities for the system.
