Changing the OLT IP and Management VLAN

Introduction

The purpose of this Application Note is to provide procedures used to change the IP Address or Management VLAN of a network element.  The SR29 release allows changing the management IP Address or VLAN without having to reboot the OLT, delete the NE database, or interrupt user data traffic.  In many cases, a full turnup can now be performed without a reboot.

Document Number

ENG-010527

Applies To

This Application Note applies to all network elements running SR29 or above.   This AppNote only applies to systems that have been previously turned up using either the turnup command or the new element management turnup wizard.

Procedure

Backup the OLT

Information Note: It is important that a backup be always done prior to making any major changes to the OLT

Perform the OLT backup in the EMS created from the database by using the Backup View and the NE Context on the Panorama EMS.

The subsequent OLT backup file name format defaults to the OLT TID, followed by the date and timestamp <TID> <MMDDYY> _ <HHMMSS>

When the OLT is restored, this process overwrites the OLT data in the Panorama PON database and sends the new information to the OLT.

After the process is completed, the Panorama PON indicates the final backup status of the backup, either:  Success or Failure.

Delete OLTs

Information Note: The OLT ONLY needs to be deleted if the OLT IP address is being changed on the OLT.
Warning Warning:
The deletion of an OLT will affect the following configurations which have attributes which span multiple NEs and must be carefully considered in these use cases:
  • Softswitch voice and VoIP Phones are not affected
  • Protection Groups are deleted and must be manually re-entered.

Once the Delete OLT process is complete, connect a serial cable from a laptop computer to the primary or Master ESU.

Connect to ESU Serial Port

Establish a serial port connection (refer to Connecting to the ESU Serial Port, in the Tellabs 1100 Series Optical LAN Craft User Interface Guide; and remove the secondary, or slave ESU at the OLT level.

Element Management Wizard

With SR29, the CLI has introduced the new Element Management wizard.  Three new wizards have been introduced to ease management interface re-configuration:

  • IPaddr  - Wizard used to change/show NE IP Address related data. usage: ip run | ip show
  • MGmtVlan - Wizard used to change/show Management VLAN related data. usage: mgv run | mgv show
  • TurNup - Wizard used for TYPICAL/Shortened turnup. usage: tn run | tn show.  Only prompts the user for the most commonly used settings.

Display Current Settings using CLI

It is a good idea to display the current settings prior to making any changes.

Change Management IP Address

The element management wizard command ipAddr can be used to change the IP address of the OLT.  The OLT should be deleted on the EMS prior to running this command.  Please note warnings above about effects to Protection Groups.  This command allows modification of the IP address without an ESU reboot and does not delete the database of the OLT.  Once the modification is complete, the OLT should be re-added with read from OLT.

Change Management VLAN ID Values

The new management VLAN ID wizard allows changing of the management VLAN ID without rebooting the ESU.  The change is non service affecting the OLT although the change needs to be coordinated on the attached switch to ensure that communications to the EMS is restored.  It is recommended that the new VLAN be configured on the attached switch and along the network back to the EMS so that the VLANs will get updated on the EMS.  Otherwise, it may take some time to sync with the EMS and the changes to show up in the EMS.

Turn Up Wizard

A Turnup wizard has been added to the system that allows the user to turnup the OLT with a reduced set of the most commonly used parameters.  It also defaults the setup, remembers the current settings and uses them as defaults.  In most instances the Turnup wizard can be re-run without affecting existing traffic.  The system will inform the user whether a service affecting reboot is required.  For initial turnup, the turnup documentation should be consulted as the procedure differs slightly for initial turnup.

The following parameters can be modified by re-running the turnup wizard after the initial turnup with no effect to data traffic and the changes will be done without deletion of the database or a reboot of the ESU cards:

  • IP Address
  • IP Netmask
  • IP Gateway
  • Number of ESU cards
  • LACP Settings
  • Management VLAN ID
  • Management VLAN Priority

Add OLTs

After an IP address change or re-turnup, the OLT should be re-added to the EMS.  During the Add OLT process, when requested to read the provisioned data from the OLT, answer yes.  This adds back the OLT to the EMS. Refer to the Tellabs 1100 Series Optical LAN Managing the PON User Guide, Add a Tellabs 1100 Series OLT for more details.
