Customizing OLT Alarm Mappings

Introduction

Many of the alarms reported by OLT are driven by an alarm profile that is distributed with EMS applications. This Application Note describes the procedure to change the default alarm mappings and apply the change to all OLT through the EMS GUI.

Applies To

This Application Note applies to Panorama PON EMS version 29.0 or later.

Solution

This procedure describes the steps to change only the default alarm severity mappings. Any other alarm settings should not be modified. To change the mappings, you will need a plain text editor that is insensitive to the XML file format, for example, NotePad for Windows and vi for Solaris. Here are the steps:

  1. Log into the EMS server machine, open Alarmseverity.xml file under C:TellabsPanoramaPONbbmgrserverdataAlarmAdapterSubsystem folder. For Solaris system, see the notes below for the exact path to the file.
  2. Using the alarm description, locate the alarm definition record that matches with the alarm you want to change.

  3. Find the assignedSeverity element, the possible values that can be used for this element are:
    • eCRITICAL - This alarm is a critical failure.  Typically used for system wide failures.
    • eMAJOR - This alarm is a major failure. Typically used for failures with significant numbers of lines affected.
    • eMINOR - Typically is non service affecting and is a cosmetic or maintenance item, or is a protected unit so that service is not affected.
    • eNOTREPORTED - Assigning this severity will suppress alarms of this type and they will no longer be shown on the NE, EMS or be reported.  All alarms of this type will be suppressed.
  4. Replace the default severity with the new severity value you want to assign, make sure you include the lowercase "e" character.
  5. Save the file.
  6. Launch EMS GUI and log in as an EMS administrator.
  7. Use the "Update Alarm Mappings" menu item under Edit to push the just modified profile to all OLTs being managed by EMS.

  8. EMS will pop up a status window to display the progress of this process. Close the window when it is finished.
  9. Any new alarms should be reported with the modified severity.
Information Note: For Solaris systems, the typical path to this file is: /opt/tellabs/panoramapon/bbmgr/server/data/AlarmAdapterSubsystem/Alarmseverity.xml

Summary

This straightforward procedure would allow you to customize how the alarms are reported by the OLT. However, since this procedure requires direct manipulation of the system configuration file, please use extreme caution when applying it. If you are not comfortable with making this change, please contact Tellabs TAC for assistance.
