OLAN IPV6 Support
Introduction
This document will outline the Tellabs support for IPv6, how to configure the OLT for IPv6 Dual Stacking and any operational guidance for IPv6 Deployments.

IPv6 Support on Tellabs OLAN
This document will cover IPv6 support of the OLAN product in two different contexts:
- IPv6 Management Support
- IPv6 Data Plane Support
IPv6 Management Support
The management plane is the applications and interfaces actually used for configuring, maintaining and getting status from the OLT. The Management plane can be broken up into multiple interfaces:
- OLT to EMS Management Interface
- OLT SSH / CLI Interface
- EMS Client Interface
In addition, the OLT and EMS have different capabilities in terms of IPv4 and IPv6.
The OLT is capable of being configured in Dual Stacked mode and can accept configuration and provide status on either IPv4 and IPv6.
The EMS Application can only utilize a single IP Address / Stack at one given time. The EMS application can support either IPv4 or IPv6, but not both at the same time. The EMS when initially install is configured as IPv4 or IPv6 and all OLTs that are managed by that EMS will be managed to/from the same IP address.
The OLT to EMS Management interface is the interface used by the EMS to configure and get status from the OLT and as stated above must be either IPv4 or IPv6 but not both.
The OLT itself when dual stacked will accept connections for either the EMS or ssh on either its IPv4 address or IPv6 address.
The OLT can have it's turnup configuration updated to move to dual stacked mode without affecting the current database of configuration to facilitate easy transitions to IPv6.
The ssh port on the OLT will accept connections on either the IPv4 or IPv6 address or both whenever it is configured for dual stacking.
Dual stack support exists for NTP, Syslog, and SNMP.
The OLT can be polled from either it's IPv4 or IPv6 address.
IPv6 Data Plane Support
The OLT data plane has always supported IPv6 and transparently transports IPv6 traffic without issues in all supported releases. Both IPv4 and IPv6 can co-exist in the data plane without issues.
The OLT does not currently support IPv6 MLD (IPv6 IGMP equivalent) but floods all IPv6 multicast and multicast operates without issues. In all installations that Tellabs has worked with this has not proved to be an issue as most of the Multicast video and streaming distribution has been via IPv4.
The OLT does not currently support DAI (Dynamic ARP Inspection) for the IPv6 packets.
The OLT does support RADIUS authentication of ports using IPv4 or IPv6 RADIUS interfaces. The appropriate interface will be selected based on the RADIUS server IP addresses.
The OLT does support IPv6 ACLs.
The OLT does support IPv6 voice on the 729GP only. All other analog voice is limited to IPv4.
EMS IPv6 Configuration
The EMS can be configured for IPv6 service on installation.
Upgrading to IPv6 requires a fresh install of the EMS selecting the IPv6 address as the primary management address for the EMS.
During the EMS Installation on this screen, simply select the IPv6 address and the EMS will now use the IPv6 address for managing all OLTs and for all Client connections. Both the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses will be listed.
OLT IPv6 Configuration
The OLT is configured for IPv6 operation using the Turnup Configuration Wizard.
When configuring the OLT, simply select either IPv6 or Dual Stacked. Dual Stacked is recommended to allow IPv4 access to the unit for maintenance and other services.
The preferred Protocol for Element Management Interface must match the one selected by the EMS. The OLT uses the interface configured (IPv4 or IPv6) to send Alarms and Events to the EMS and it is important that it matches the EMS configuration.
