ONT Auto Configuration Support

Introduction

The FP28 feature package of the Tellabs Optical LAN introduces a new set of features collectively called ONT Auto Configuration.  This feature is designed to simplify the administration of ONTs by automatically configuring the system at the time the ONT is discovered on the PON.  This Application Note also defines the flags that control the behavior of ONT auto configuration.

Applies To

This Application Note applies to all FP28 OLAN systems running FP28.0 or above.

ONT Auto Configuration

ONT Auto Configuration is used in applications where ease and speed of ONT installation are the prime concern.  The ONT Auto Configuration feature will, upon seeing an unknown ONT on the PON, assign it an ONT ID, and configure that ONT for the proper type based on what is reported by the ONT.  Configuration will then be applied to the ONT from the template.  This allows the installation of ONTs and them going into service without any manual intervention.

ONT Auto Configuration is configured within the PON Profile.

The ONT Auto Configuration flag, when enabled, will cause the system to automatically accept the ONT onto the PON when it is ranged by the OLT.  The Minimum ONT and Maximum ONT ID will define the range of ONT IDs that the system is allowed to use to assign to the ONTs when they are detected on the PON.

ONT Auto Configuration and ONT Templates

Much of the job of Auto Configuration is accomplished via the ONT Equipment Templates which are a part of the OLT Commissioning Wizard.  The OLT Commissioning Wizard is found under Tools->Wizard->Commissioning.  The template only matters at the time of ONT creation for the first time.  When it is first created, the Template is applied to the ONT.  This allows you to set your "preferred" way of configuring the ONT when it shows up on a PON.  This is used at Add ONT time if you use the commissioning wizard, or at the time of ONT creation in any other scenario.

Figure 2 Typical ONT Template

Templates only apply at the initial creation of an ONT.  Updating the template ONLY affects ONTs created after that point.

Templates can be created and edited to set up the user's preference for the initial configuration of the ONT.

The default template is not editable and new templates must be manually created and populated.

Each ONT type has a template that has all the attributes which are appropriate for that ONT.  Filling out in the Commissioning wizard will define for the system how to initialize the configuration for all ONTs of that type.

ONT Auto Configuration and Add OLT Wizard

The software release also a wizard for the purpose of doing an Add OLT, which eliminates most of the manual configuration tasks.  This wizard allows you to assign profiles to all the ports of the OLT at the time the OLT is added.

This is accomplished via several screens:

The ONT Templates created at OLT commissioning can now be assigned to the OLT, and they will be used to default the ONT upon creation.  Additionally, the PON profile is also assigned within this screen.

Figure 4 ONT Port Service Configuration

The ONT Port Service configuration allows you to automatically configure Data service VLANS andVoIP (3rd party IP Phones) service VLANs on all the ports within the system.  The system can even automatically increment VLAN IDs per PON Card or PON port.  This allows scenarios such as:

  • VoIP and Data are configured on every port.
  • VoIP on all even-numbered ports and data on every Odd port.
  • VoIP on port 1 and Data on ports 1-3 (using ranging)

For most configurations where the VLAN architecture is very consistent, this allows for ONTs to be brought automatically into service on installation with all ports properly configured.

The user will also be prompted to update to validate the service profiles and NAC profiles that will be applied to all ports.  The system will then create all the needed profiles and rules to support the automatic configuration of all new ONTs.

Discover Unexpected ONT

If Discover Unexpected ONT is checked, then the system will discover ONTs that have been added to the system and add them to the Unexpected ONT menu, allowing them to be added by a person or automatically if Auto Configuration is on.

If in a highly secure environment, it is recommended that Discover Unexpected ONT be turned off so that ONTs added to the system will be ignored and not allowed onto the system.  ONTs can still be added manually by entering the ONT serial number, or temporarily enabling this flag.  This can be done by temporarily assigning a profile with Discover Unexpected ONT enabled accepting the ONT and then reassigning the profile with Discover Unexpected ONT unchecked.

Unexpected ONT Alarm

If enabled, and Auto Configuration is off, when an ONT arrives on the PON it will be alarmed.  This allows the user to be informed as soon as someone plugs in an ONT on the PON and also gives its location.  This gives an easy way for the user to be find and configure new ONTs or remove ONTs from the PON that were not authorized to be there.

This attribute is configured in the PON profile.  If it is enabled, unexpected ONTs will be alarmed.  If it is disabled, unexpected ONTs will be on the unexpected list, but will not cause an alarm to be generated.

ONTs may be alarmed when:

  • Discover ONT is enabled,  and Auto configure is disabled and an unexpected ONT arrives.  Unexpected ONTs are those that do not have their serial number configured on the PON.

Excessive Arrival Violation

If an ONT arrives more than 10 times in two minutes, then this will cause a trigger.  If Auto Disable is enabled, then the ONT will be alarmed with an Access Violation alarm that has the Additional Info set to <Excessive Arrivals>.  If Auto Disable is disabled, then it has no effect.

Summary

The new feature of ONT Auto Configuration can be utilized to eliminate most manual entries for ONT configuration.  This allows for ONTs automatically going into service upon installation within a system with no manual intervention.
