Golden Card

The OLT-6, OLT-1134 and OLT-1150 have slots for redundant ESU cards. The Standby ESU card carries upstream traffic and provides management redundancy.

The use of a Golden Card allows a copy of the software and database to be saved and used for rapid rollback to the previous release in the event of an upgrade issue. A Golden Card is an ESU that is removed from the OLT after it has synchronized its software and database with the Active ESU. A spare ESU is then placed into the standby slot, allowed to synchronize and be used during the upgrade.  If a failure occurs, all cards can be removed from the system, the golden card put back on the shelf, and the system will return to the pre-upgrade state with all services active.  Golden cards are not typically used in PPG systems as one of the OLTs will be in an older release until the final steps of an upgrade and can be used for rapid rollback.

To reduce downtime and not lose data if an upgrade failure occurs, it is best to use a spare (third) ESU to serve as a golden card during the upgrade.

Information Note: Tellabs always recommends onsite spares for any mission-critical or large-scale networks.
  1. Identify the ESU Standby card (ACT LED off).  If the ESU Standby ACT LED is blinking, wait until the ACT LED is off and STAT LED is solid green before continuing.
Information Note: The ACT LEDs will show a steady green to indicate which ESU is active. The STAT LED indicates the health of the unit. ESUA or ESUB could be the current Active ESU

  2. Remove the ESU Standby card, designated as the Golden Card, to be used in the event of a rollback.
Information Note: The cards can be removed/replaced under power (Hot Swappable) at any time.
Warning Caution: The Golden Card should be placed in an Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) bag after being removed from the OLT.
  3. Insert the spare (third) ESU card into the vacant Standby slot, wait until the STAT LED is solid green and the ACT LED is off before proceeding with the upgrade.
Information Note: The ESU may reboot several times before this occurs.
  4. In the unlikely event of an upgrade failure, remove the ESU(s) from the system, place the Golden Card ESU into the Primary slot of the OLT and wait for the system to restore service.  Service should start returning on the order of 7 minutes for larger networks.
