Install a Quad Optical Interface Unit (QOIU7)

This section provides procedures to install I/O cards and connect the necessary cabling to support FTTP applications.

Use the following procedure to install the Quad Optical Interface Unit (QOIU7).

  1. If not already removed, remove the MDS5 or MDS7 OLT front cover.
  2. Remove the blank faceplate from the appropriate input/output (I/O) slot for this QOIU7.
  3. Unpack and inspect the QOIU7 for any apparent damage. If there is damage, notify the supervisor for assistance and do not proceed (see Fig. 1).

  1. Carefully insert the card into the card guides until the card contacts the backplane connector. Then apply equal pressure on both upper and lower ejectors.
  2. Upon insertion, the STAT LED illuminates RED while the card performs internal power up diagnostics. Upon successful completion of the power up diagnostics, the STAT LED blinks GREEN at 0.5 second interval while initializing. Upon completion of initialization, the STAT LED illuminates solid GREEN (see Figure 2).

  1. Did the STAT LED sequence as described in Step 5?
    • If YES, go to Step 7.
    • If NO, remove the card and replace it with a known good unit.
  2. Locate the SFP modules included with the QOIU7.
  3. Remove the SFP modules from the individual boxes and insert them into each of the SFP receivers of the QOIU7.
  4. Are additional QOIU7s to be installed?
    • If YES, Repeat this procedure from Step 3.
    • If NO, go to Step 10.
  5. If work is complete, replace the shelf cover, otherwise go to Step 11.
  6. On the fiber cross-connect panel, remove the fiber from the port assigned to the associated QOIU.
  7. Clean and connect the fiber to an optical power meter.
  8. Using an optic power meter, measure both the 1310 nanometer (nm) upstream and 1490nm downstream optic power levels.
  9. Are the 1310nm upstream and 1490nm downstream optic power levels as specified in Table 1?

Table 1: QOIU7 Optic Levels

 Installed xOIU

Transmit Limits (dBm/mW) Receive Limits (dBm/mW)
Min. Max. Min. Max.
QOIU7 +0.5/1.122 +5/3.162 -27/0.002 -8/0.158
  • If YES, go to Step 16.
  • If NO, use the following procedure until the optic levels are within the parameters specified in Table 2:
  1. Check and clean the connections at the QOIU and the optical power meter.
  2. Verify that the quad-fiber jumper, and accompanying fibers, are not pinched or cut and that no micro-bends exist.
  3. Verify the optic levels from Table 2 using another quad fiber jumper. If the optic levels are verified, this may indicate a bad quad fiber jumper or QOIU card. Replace the quad fiber jumper if necessary.
  4. If the QOIU card is bad, replace the QOIU card with a known good unit, and repeat Step 11 through Step 13. If the optic levels test within the parameters specified in Table 2, go toStep 15.
  1. If, after following the instructions above, the optic levels cannot be tested and verified, contact the next level of technical support for assistance.
  2. On the fiber cross-connect panel, continue to remove the fiber jumpers from assigned ports and test for the optical power levels per Table 2.
