Install the AMU1

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)

Observe and follow all ESD instructions while handling Tellabs plug-in equipment.

Danger  Caution! The Tellabs plug-in equipment uses semiconductor devices that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove a plug-in from a protective packing box or equipment rack until the time of installation or replacement. To equalize the static charge on the plug-in, establish a body path to the ground using an ESD wrist strap connected to an ESD ground. [If storing or shipping the plug-in becomes necessary, place the plug-in in a conductive shipping box to prevent static buildup.]

Apply the following precautions:

  • Use grounded wrist straps, table mats, floor mats
  • Handle static-sensitive devices in the nonconductive areas
  • Place static-sensitive cards into an antistatic plastic bag
  • Use protective ESD-sensitive packing and shipping bags when returning repairable components
Information Note: Installation of the AMU1 is only required for the MDS5 shelf.

 Installation Procedure

Use the following procedure to install the Alarm Maintenance Unit (AMU1).

  1. If not already open, open the Tellabs 1150 MDS5 OLT cover (see Figure 1).

  1. Remove the blank faceplate from the slot labeled AMU.
  1. Unpack and inspect the AMU1 for any apparent damage. If there is apparent damage, notify the supervisor for assistance and do not proceed (see Figure 2).

  1. Carefully insert the card into the upper and lower card guides until the card contacts the backplane connector. Then apply equal pressure on both upper and lower ejectors.
  1. Upon insertion (see Figure 3), the STAT LED illuminates RED while performing internal power-up diagnostics. Upon successful completion of the power-up diagnostics, the STAT LED blinks GREEN at a 0.5 second interval while initializing. Upon completion of initialization, the STAT LED illuminates solid GREEN.

  1. Did the STAT LED sequence described in Step 5?
    • If YES, go to Step 7.
    • If NO, remove the card and replace it with a known good unit.
  2. Are Alarm Inputs to be terminated at the AMU at this time?
    • If YES, go to Step 8.
    • If NO, go to Step 10.
  3. Using CAT5 shield twisted-pair cable and connect the alarm inputs.
  4. Segregate the ground of the shielded twisted-pair cable and terminate it on the shelf ground screw on the faceplate of the AMU (see Fig. 2).
  5. Notify the Data Center/Network Operations Center (NOC) that the AMU has been installed and is ready to be provisioned (refer to Managing the Tellabs 1100 Series Optical LAN User’s Guide, Managing Environmental Alarm Profiles).
  6. Go to Install the TDU1.
